Each element is represented by a chemical symbol consisting of one or two letters .


Between groups and periods

Period 1 contains the lightest elements: hydrogen and helium. Period 2 contains lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine and neon. Subsequent periods add an additional electron and proton to the nucleus of the elements preceding them.


Elements located in the same column have similar chemical properties due to their identical electronic configuration. For example, Group 1 elements , the alkali metals, have a unique, reactive external electronic valence. The elements of group 18, for their part (the noble gases), have a stable and inert electronic configuration.


What is the only letter not on the periodic table?

Symbols for elements in the periodic table are usually abbreviations based on their names in English, Latin, or German . While these symbols are often single letters, two letters can sometimes be used to represent an element. This is particularly the case for sodium (“Na”) and iron (“Fe”).
