An AI-powered “translator” to understand chicken language
An AI to better interact with chickens
After using virtual reality to calm cows , here is artificial intelligence to understand the language of chickens . A study published on the Research Square platform on June 8, 2023 describes this innovation for breeders. According to researchers at the University of Tokyo (Japan), this should make it easier for professionals to interact with their poultry.
Remember that chickens produce different sounds depending on the time of day and their mood. These sounds vary, among other things, in the event of the presence of a predator, the laying of an egg or even in the event of hatching of fertilized eggs, for example. For breeders, it therefore appears important to recognize these different sounds in order to meet the needs of their animals , but also to detect any problems within the henhouse.
To do this, Japanese scientists have described a particular AI technique: Deep Emotional Analysis Learning (DEAL). It is an emotional learning process based on mathematical algorithms that are able to understand the emotional states of chickens using auditory data. The AI was fed using around a hundred hours of sound recordings of chickens. However, each sound integrated by the system corresponds to one of the different emotional states of the birds.
A success rate that could change
“ To ensure the accuracy of our system's interpretations, we collaborated with a team of eight animal and veterinary psychologists, who provided expert information on the emotional states of the chickens ,” the study reads. The researchers used AI to analyze no less than 200 hours of sounds coming from around 80 hens. According to the results, the success rate of the system is 80%. Furthermore, the authors identified six main emotional states , namely anger, distress, hunger, excitement, contentment and even fear.
According to those responsible for the study, this advance should help breeders better understand their chickens and they will eventually be able to rely on a dedicated mobile application . The AI should also be constantly evolving, because the more it hears the sounds made by the chickens, the more its accuracy is likely to increase.
